After 10 years of dreaming we at last set off on our family adventure. Charlotte and Bella travelled in from Marseille, and Emily and I from London; to meet in Lisbon for our TAP flight to Fortaleza in the north of Brazil. The plane was from one of Take Another Plane’s (TAP’s) more vintage collections, with an entertainment system from the 80s.
After 10 minutes of watching “Isle of Dogs” in Portuguese we were all out cold.
Charlotte and I are a little wary of Brazil as we know from Vera that it can be a hard place, and that safety is a concern. What will we find when we get off the plane?!? As you see from the photo above, Fortaleza has a shiny new airport and we were greeted by our friendly Brazilian transfer driver. One of the first things we saw is how little street lighting there was on the 45 minute journey up to Cumboco. There were lots of people around, but so little light. We arrived tired, but happy to have got away. And our kind hosts had left us two ice cold Cerveja to welcome us to Brazil. “Legal!”

The amazing pancake cake
Lion guards the presents
Time to hit the sand …
It was one of the best day’s in Brazil it was so fun. The pancake cake was amazing and so yummy. We went on a dune buggy adrenaline tour it was so fast and bumpy. We stopped off at a water park where there was a really exciting zip wire into water and a massive red water slide!!!😅

Kite surfing is excellent fun. If you want to try it in a different country this is what you do and then you might get an idea if you actually want to do it. It doesn’t seem like it is going to be excellent fun but it actually is. This is how you do it: you have a harness around your waist which attaches to a kite and you first learn how to steer the kite and then you go in the water and you try to get on a board. After fully you can stand up on the board then you can move the bar and go on the sea. And you can move the bar up and down and learn to jump. 👅😎😃😀🏙

Jericoacoara is a cross between Koh Pha Ngan in the earliest days, Miami Beach…..and the Costa del Sol! We’ve enjoyed lots of fun street art, blinding sunsets (esp from the dune), a full lunar eclipse, some surprisingly incredible sushi (with an even more surprisingly drinkable bottle of brut), and a whole lot of people watching. We have succumbed to hair braids and temporary tats, all washed down with buckets of Skol (maize infused beer – surprisingly drinkable when very cold). We have mostly chilled here, but tomorrow will be hitting the dunes on quad bikes to rev it up a bit.
After saying farewell to the Schrauts 2 days ago, Jeri has been our first taste of traveling ‘a famille’. I think each and every one of us has felt tested (in a variety of ways), but we topped off tonight with endless games of Happy Families (thank you Hintons!) which hit the right message on a lot of levels!

There are some mornings when the family just gets out of the wrong side of bed. And this was one of those days. We had not got much planned for the day in Jeri, and the lack of activity only exacerbated sisterly and paternal tensions.
What we needed was a bit of family bonding, and what better idea to all go and get a tattoo. Hang on, hold your horses. We’re not talking about anything life defining, but something that should last no more than the the time we are away …
It started with Emily, with an elegant dandelion, and continues on this track with an anchor for Bella with “fé” (faith / trust) woven into it, and mum with birds-on-a-wire and things went downhill when Dad asked for something across his shoulder and up the neck. I’ve never seen my three ladies say “Noooooh!” so vociferously. On reflections it is probably not a great idea to say to your tattooist “what do you feel like doing today?” The result is well.. for you to decide..

So as the charms of Jeri unfold, a slightly disconcerting dichotomy of genuinely adventurous adrenaline fuelled activities overlaid with a continuous barrage of posing opportunities becomes apparent. Today we hooned it around the dunes on a 70km Quad Bike adventure, with badly fitting helmets and jamming gears, tipping ourselves over the edge of precipices and and through engine skimming rivers, surviving whipping sandstorms, and suffering blistering heat………….stopping every 20 minutes for another pose! We posed on the top of the dune, in the mangroves (extra points for getting on the swings and thrusting your chest out and your head back), in front of the water, in the water, in the hammocks in the water……..you get the picture!
Emily poses like she was born to it
Family Monico posing could do with some work, but alas we move on to the next town tomorrow.
